Hammers and Oaths through the Northlands

Thrudgelmir Giant from Northland: Norse Adventures

Yesterday saw the release of the Northlands: Norse Adventures Kickstarter by Kobold Press. This setting will be made available for both 2024 Dungeons & Dragons, as well as Kobold Press’s own Tales of the Valiant. Backers are welcomed to look through a decently sized 18-page overview of the setting that seems at first blush for the D&D take on the setting.

While I have always been a fan of Norse mythology and anything generally speaking Northern European, I am personally in a bit burned out by its perceived overuse in the last quinquennium or so. Still, the preview is nicely arranged and is a good sampling of what will be offered in the full product. Of course Kobold Press is also promising full Digital support with D&D Beyond release same day as digital release and Roll20, Foundry, and Shard VTT after physical release (which is kinda weird IMO).

Oathhammer by Broken Blade had a successful Kickstarter back in July and is now available for Pre-Order on BackerKit. While I didn’t notice anything about VTT Support, I would expect that at the very least there will be fan sheets for Roll20 and Modules for Foundry soon after release.

Oath Hammer 2025 Broken Blade, Art by Justin Gerard

Oath Hammer takes place on the Isles of Osric (get it?) and Nockland. A long time ago, the Dwarves of Osric were driven from their homeland by monstrous races and spread out among the communities of Nockland. The gist of the game is the taking back of the Dwarven Homelands

Honestly, it’s all really cool sounding.

Oath Hammer uses a d6 dice pool system and color coordinating dice with different success ratios. The Quick Start is a little vague (or I missed it) on how the player obtains which colors, but certain status effects, items, etc. Mechanics-wise, I am most interested in the Oath system. During character creation the player picks three oaths, depending on how well they honor those oaths they either receive a Boon (ex +2 bonus to attack rolls) or a Bane (ex -1 penalty to attack rolls).

Currently, there is a Quick Start / Preview available for Oath Hammer and I can’t recommend it enough!

Oh! One more thing! Oath Hammer does have a 3rd Party license (See HERE) so expect a lot of support for it – I am even thinking of doing something.
