Necromancer Games “Creature Feature” Crowd Funding Project

Necromancer Games has another Indigogo project in works, this one is a two-for, with Fungus God From Outer Space and Hersey of Rot. The adventures promise different kinds of horror from one another, with Fungus God looking to be the more experimental of the two. From the Indigogo page:

Fungus God from Outer Space

While investigating the crash landing of a strange celestial body, the heroes encounter the ruins of a hobgoblin settlement and the crouching figure of the massive Fungus God rising from the spore-filled crater beyond. Why is it here? What can be done? Find out now!

From the twisted mind of Casey Christofferson comes an adventure of cosmic horror from beyond the depths of space and time. The veteran Necromancer Games and Troll Lord Games creator behind such works as Haunted HighlandsCity of Brass, and Bard’s Gate introduces a brand-new terror for your holiday gaming table of horrors!

Fungus God from Outer Space is designed for Tier 2 or 3 characters in 5th edition fantasy roleplaying, the OSR version is designed for 4-6 characters of 8th to 9th level, and for Castles & Crusades’ parties, it is designed for 4-6 characters between 6th and 9th level.

Conversely, Hersey of Rot seems to be more akin to the types of tales and adventures we would tell around the camp fire at night when I was a kid. Which is to say the kind of horror found in a Hammer Film or a USA Up All Night style show. From the campaign:

Heresy of Rot

Greetings children of the grave … and happy Frog-O-Weeeeeen!! It is I, your host and guide into the unknown: SAM HAIN! Won’t you join me?

Tonight’s entry into the unknown brings you a tale of woe from the Wilderlands’ frontier! A shadowy cult preys on the folk of the unsuspecting town of Fetterwald as a supernatural terror stalks the cornfields. And what lies within the lonely grave of Doctor Coffin?! A ruined manse holds a dark secret while a horror beyond imagining wakes in a nightmarish dream world. Will your characters be too late to stop it?

Now lie back in your coffins and enjoy a sip of this Frogalicious witch’s brew; it’s sure to absolutely petrify your nerves!

Heresy of Rot is an adventure for 4–6 high Tier 1 or low Tier 2 characters in 5e. The OSR version is designed for 4-5 characters of 6th to 8th level, and 4th to 6th level in Castles & Crusades.

Heresy of Rot is written by Levi Combs and John McGuire.

The interesting part here is the inclusion of a Third rule set. For the last more-or-less year both Frog God and Necromancer have been releasing these with only two rules options: OSR/OSE (Previously Swords and Wizardry) and 5e after – I assume – the inclusion of Pathfinder versions didn’t go too well. Now, however, the fine folks in the Houses the Orcus built have teamed up with Troll Lord Games in order to release these new adventures using the Castles & Crusades/Seige ruleset. Given that C&C is up in my Top 5 list I am generally happy about this news and I hope the partnership between these companies is long and sweet.

As for the products themselves, I am personally hoping that the Magazine size format will be used once again for the OSR version and not just the 5e or (hopefully) the C&C version. This hope is mainly because I am personally still disappointed that the last adventure I backed – The Tower of Dead Thieves – had an OSR version that was badly formatted for a 5×8 fanzine style instead of the typical magazine style the 5e and other previous releases had used.

Outside of physical likes and dislikes, I have found Frog God and Necromancer to consistently deliver fun and well-thought-out adventures that have kept my players on their feet every time I have pulled one out.

The Halloween Double Feature has 22 days left until its campaign ends which gives everyone plenty of time to figure out if these adventures are for them and which system to use. For me, this is a must-buy, especially for the Fungus God!
