Been thinking again recently of using the Basic ruleset or S&W as a core to a modern-themed setting/ruleset. Typically modern games (like d20 Modern, Modern Paths, etc) have a near classless system and instead have things like a singular or dual type class like strong/charismatic. I think that maybe with the right type of Modern Setting (say Dark Matter or Shadow Chasers) the traditional classes would more or less work with mild adjustment.
Fighting-men for instance can go down two paths, the Street Fighter or the Soldier. The Street Fighter is more along the lines of a traditional Fighting-man while the Soldier is more along the lines of a Ranger. Let us take a look, quick and dirty like:
Street Fighter
You grew up on the streets and learned to take care of yourself by beating those who would have hurt you into the ground. You may not like what the street has made you, but you use it to your advantage and maybe to the advantage of others.
Street Fighters typically become either thugs under the employ of crime bosses or as vigilantes who protect the places the police can’t or won’t.

Soldier
You might have lived a normal life, or maybe grew up in a war torn country, either way when you were old enough you ran off and joined the military. Through months and years of service you have become a trained solider lethal in the theatres of war with the skills and mindset to help change the world.
Soldiers typically become either mercenaries of employed by private security agencies. Sometimes, but very rarely they become street level vigilantes and tend to butt heads with the undisciplined (and to the Soldier, unhinged) Street Fighters.
